Il Town Hall of Memphis it is one of the main monuments of the Agrigento town, located in the scenic area Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, the most important in Memphis, where there are also other important buildings of great historical and cultural interest. The Town Hall of Menfi is a splendid architectural work characterized by a fascinating Liberty style: Art Nouveau, which manifests itself both on the outside of the building and in its interior, showing fine workmanship even in its smallest details. The building consists of well 3 levels, the first of which features a scenic entrance portal with carvings on the surface, while the intermediate level sees the presence of small balconies. The last level is characterized by some large windows, accompanied by elegant frames which add a particular detail.

History of the Town Hall of Menfi

The current Town Hall of Menfi was built in 1927, therefore it shows itself as one of the most recent buildings of historic center of Menfi, where there are secular monuments that date back to the foundation of the city, which took place between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, when it was still a small rural village. The original Town Hall of Menfi is the Palazzo Pignatelli, located in the same Piazza Vittorio Emanuele III, which held this role until the construction of the more modern structure. Palazzo Pignatelli, which today is the headquarters of Malacological Museum of Menfi, has the last remains of the ancient on its side Swabian Castle of Menfi, showing some ruins of one of its large towers. This extraordinary building was built way back in 1638, therefore one of the first buildings built in the original urban settlement that gave life to Menfi, which occurred thanks to the work of Diego Aragona Tagliavia Pignatelli who, at that time, lived in this very building.

At the end of the feudal era, Palazzo Pignatelli hosted the first historian Memphis town hall, and then change its functions over time, so much so that it first became one magistrates Court and then, in more recent times, it was redeveloped to be used for Scholastic Institute, hosting the city's young students. In the meantime, the establishment of the Municipality of Menfi moved to the current Palazzo Comunale of Menfi, which has continued to fulfill its functions very well for about a century.
