Comiso, in the Free Municipal Consortium of Ragusa, is a town with over 30 inhabitants whose historic center, rich in monuments and clubs, attracts many visitors every year. Among the most appreciated buildings in the centre, there is undoubtedly the Church of San Biagio in Comiso, of which today we tell you the story.
The Church of San Biagio is not only one of the main attractions of the city, but it is also a testimony of history of Comiso: the original building, in fact, built in 1500 on the foundations of a much older construction, was completely destroyed by the earthquake of 1693 and was rebuilt only in 1700. The devotion of the local faithful to San Biagio has very deep roots, in fact it is linked to the Byzantine origins of the community.
San Biagio, Patron of the city, is celebrated in the second Sunday of July.

The architecture of the Church of San Biagio in Comiso and the works it houses

The current Church of San Biagio in Comiso, built in the eighteenth century, differs from the previous one in that it has a single nave, as we can guess simply by admiring the main facade of the building from the outside. This looks like a majestic façade in white local stone, from which a single, large wooden door stands out, framed by a round arch. The door is surmounted by a large rectangular window, which opens from the upper floor.
Inside the Church, it is possible to admire paintings by Novelli, frescoes by Sicilian artists such as Gaetano di Stefano di Chiaramonte and other paintings by local eighteenth-century authors.

What you can do at the Church of San Biagio in Comiso and in the surrounding area

Furthermore, you can admire the works of the painter and sculptor Salvatore Fiume, kept at the Basilica of Maria SS. Announced and also the works of Gagini, in the very ancient and wonderful Church of San Francesco all'Immacolata, built in the XNUMXth century and today a National Monument.
In the centre, there are other beautiful buildings sacred to the Roman Catholic cult, such as the Church of San Giuseppe Lo Spesso, but also religious buildings of Buddhist worship, such as the Peace Pagoda, built in 1998 and a very rare example of its kind throughout the continent. Another jewel of Comiso is the Castle of the Naselli d'Aragona, late fifteenth-century fort, built on even older foundations. The Baptistery of San Gregorio Magno is annexed to the Castle, also a destination for tourists and lovers of ancient art.
Walking through the streets of the center, you will also come across other structures that will capture your gaze and your attention, such as the former fish market, the Palazzo Comunale and Trigona Palace, while moving away from the city, you can walk in the most remote history of the area, reaching the archaeological site of the Roman Baths of Diana, which arose in the XNUMXnd century AD or even older site of Cava Porcaro, where ancient burials are visible.
From Comiso it is also possible to reach other places, which will make you fall in love with Sicily definitively: Modica, Gela, Licata and Noto are certainly not far destinations, all within 70 km from Comiso.
