What to know about the origins of spaghetti in Trabia

One often wonders who invented spaghetti, making it a common dish for a transversal public. Towards the closing stage of the thirteenth century, Marco Polo he took them directly from China, making them available to every Italian. Yet, the origins of this delicious dish could be very different from those usually told. In fact, it is said that the town of Trabia had already spread a particular variety of pasta very similar to future spaghetti.

The book that tells the true origins of Trabia spaghetti

Spaghetti and their origins are told by Al Idrisi, a well-known Arab scholar of geography, in his Roger's book dating back to 1154. Dry pasta is associated with the Sicilian village during a journey to the village of Trabia. Here there were numerous mills and, by chance, the author became aware of the creation of the entitled pasta triyah, with a clear filiform shape. The place was considered enchanting thanks to the mills and the water always ready to flow, without forgetting farms and plains rich in delicious pasta. The latter was abundant to the point of being able to feed the Calabrians and other territories managed by Christians and Muslims.

How Trabia spaghetti was made

In his text, Al Idrisi also provided important details regarding the preparation of the pasta. The latter was heated to about 40 degrees and dried. Then, it was cut into small ribbons and shaped to make it extremely thin. The ancient spaghetti was brought to Calabria and from there to all of Italy, especially to the city of Genoa. This location had not been chosen by chance, given that it could enjoy a privileged relationship with the Sicilian city of Trapani.

Over the years, the village of Trabia was managing to grow thanks to the help of an industry dedicated to the production of pasta, which was undergoing considerable development. As previously mentioned, this was favored by the mills and from the waters, but also from a very advantageous strategic and geographical position. In fact, the village overlooked the Tyrrhenian Sea and this element made it possible to carry the pasta onto the various boats without any difficulty, directing it towards each port. In the seventeenth century, spaghetti became iconic along the Gulf of Naples and were the prelude to the creation of the well-known Neapolitan macaroni.
