Gelsomineto beach, all the curiosities between myth and legend

It is well known that the Sicily region is always able to offer wonderful places. Today we know more in detail the famous sandy expanse known as the Gelsomineto beach.

The so-called Jasmine Grove Oasis, or also Marquise beach, rises at a very small distance from the center of Siracura and is located near the Cassibile river. But why is this beach so famous and special?

Why does this tongue of sand have this name? Many will certainly be wondering. Well, they were born here in ancient times hundreds of jasmines. That's why even today this area keeps this beautiful and floral name. The cultivation of this flower was carried out for a long time, until the end of the last century, at the behest of aFrench perfume industry. Many areas of Sicily have similar elements in their history to the one mentioned.

Nothing remains of these crops today, only a pine forest that acts as a barrier between the sea and the road, corresponding to a much appreciated green area. As we have already said, it is not the only name by which this place is recognized. In fact, the locals also refer to it as the Ra Marchisa beach. In fact, the coast also falls within the territory that belongs to Marquis family and to his fiefdom. An enormous expanse, which goes from the high Ibleo plain to the sea and is placed between the Big Quarry and Drink it, up to the plain of Syracuse.

A historical event of considerable importance

How to get there on the Oasi del Gelsomineto

Il town of Avola hosts the wonderful Gelsomineto Beach, near Syracuse. The coast is dotted with Cavagrande del Cassibile a nature reserve oriented with extraordinary vegetation. Accessing this free beach is very simple, given that the road to travel by car is rather straight and without particular winding sections. Starting from Syracuse, take the State Road 115 and go south. Then, you cross the center of Cassibile and reach the bridge located on the river of the same name. Just walk another 200 meters and follow the various road signs to reach the Pineta del Gelsomineto, and then the homonymous beach.
