The hamlet of Saponara Marittima, between history and art

The fraction of Saponara Marittima in Saponara overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea from the north-eastern coast of Sicily: the municipality of Saponara, populated by about 3.700 inhabitants, is located in the Metropolitan City of Messina, nestled among the green heights of the Peloritani mountains.

Why visit Saponara

Saponara is a municipality in the province of Messina, a small town with just 3.000 inhabitants spread over the slopes of the northern side of the Peloritani Mountains.

Saponara is a small town that has very ancient origins, and it is difficult to establish precisely the period in which it was founded, it is presumed around the year one thousand. 

Furthermore Saponara has its own fraction Saponara Marittima which delights us with splendid Beaches.

What to do in Saponara

The historic center of Saponara has so much to offer, given the fact that the city dates back to the Middle Ages and makes it characteristic, and furthermore, moving to the hamlet Saponara Marittima, you can enjoy the beauties of the beach and the sea.

In Saponara it is possible to visit the Mother Church of San Nicola di Bari, where you can still clearly read the history of the building thanks to the architectural styles of the facade, to the interiors and to the works of art that are kept there.

Do not miss a visit to Castle ruins, which unfortunately can no longer be visited inside, because it has practically been sold, but with a walk you can admire its exterior.

In the tour of the town, a visit to the Bottesco Square, the ancient fountain recently restructured and composed of basins continuously filled with clear water coming from heights of the Peloritani.

Do not miss the appointments with the events of the city, including, the Carnival in Saponara, characteristic for the Bear Parade, which takes place every year on Shrove Tuesday and the Feast of St. Nicholas of Bari, which is celebrated every year from 6 to 8 December in honor of the patron saint of the city. 

How to get around Saponara

Saponara is a small town in the province of Messina, moving around is very simple.

The historic center can be easily visited on foot, fully enjoying the beauty of the small village nestled in the mountains.

To reach the hamlet of Saponara Marittima, however, there are no buses or shuttles in the city so it is advisable to travel with your own vehicle.

How to get to Saponara

Reaching Saponara, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, is easy both by train and by car.

By car, take the A20 Messina-Buonfornello and continue until the Rometta exit, about 700 meters from the centre, while if you travel by train, you can get off at Messina Station and reach Saponara by bus or shuttle.
