Poggioreale, a ghost town with an everlasting charm
Fans of ghost towns and stories of abandoned places can only find Poggioreale beautiful, a ghost town located in the province of Trapani.
Why visit Poggioreale
Poggioreale is a small municipality in the province of Trapani which has about 1300 inhabitants and stands on a hilly area in the Belice valley.
Poggioreale is famous for its ancient village destroyed by the earthquake that in 1968 razed many areas of Belice to the ground, including Poggioreale. The most curious and passionate about ghost city they can only find the one in Poggioreale beautiful.
The new Poggioreale, on the other hand, was built a few kilometers further downstream than the old village.
Things to do in Poggioreale
Poggioreale has always been very devoted to St. Anthony of Padua, to whom a church was dedicated even in the old village which was destroyed.
It is not surprising, then, that over time places of worship have been built to express the devotion of the entire town to the saint. As the chapel of Sant'Antonio da Padova in Poggioreale, in Church of Sant'Antonio is consecrated to Patron saint of the country and it is the place where the memory of the Saint is celebrated on the occasion of Patron Saintwhich takes place every year on the 12th and 13th of June.
Getting around in Poggioreale
Our advice is to visit Poggioreale with your own car in order to be able to move independently and visit both the new center of Poggioreale and the ruins of the old village, which, as we have already said, is located a few kilometers further downstream.

How to get to Poggioreale
To get to Poggioreale the most convenient choice is that of theauto.
In particular, for those coming from Trapani or Palermo, the reference motorway is the A29, with the exit at Segesta in the first case or Gallitello and Salemi in the second. Then continue on internal roads until you reach Poggioreale.
Who, on the other hand, prefers to travel on the train, will have to refer to the stations of Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo which are those closest to Poggioreale and from there continue with the lines of local buses which are made available by the AST company.
