History of the town of Mussomeli

The history of the town of Mussomeli, in the province of Caltanissetta, dates back a long way. Even today, the heart of this extraordinary Sicilian village is a suggestive cave, the Chelli cave, evidence of an ancient past and its millenary origins.

Why visit Mussomeli

Musselburgh is a small village in the province of Caltanissetta, has about 10.000 inhabitants. Located on a small hill, with an altitude of 765m above sea level.

The town of Mussomeli is well known for its castle located on a rock overlooking the village. At the base of the castle is a wall belt which we also find in the upper part. Mussomeli Castle is one of the best preserved castles over time.

Things to do in Mussomeli

In the heart of Sicily, among the hills we find the village of Mussomeli, a small village but rich in history. Among the many beauties that can be admired we certainly find the Trabia Palace in Mussomeli. A building that reflects with its beauty the language of those who were its owners.

In Mussomeli we also find sacred buildings of considerable importance, such as the Mother Church of San Ludovico which stands on the piazzale madrix. Imposing seen from the outside and full of frescoes inside.

The ricotta and cannolo festival it is an event that attracts many tourists as it is possible to taste one of the most loved products for which Sicily is famous in the world, the Cannolo.

An equally important event is that ofancient fair of the castle of Mussomeli, a fair dedicated to livestock and agricultural equipment. During the event the history of the castle and of the town is reconstructed with performances in costumes, this makes it possible to attract a heterogeneous public and not just people interested in buying agricultural equipment.

How to get around in Mussomeli

Mussomeli is a town located in Sicily and is part of the province of Caltanissetta, it rises 650 meters above the sea level. Being a small village there are not many means of public transport. 

This does not appear to be a problem as the country being small is easily can be visited on foot or with some bike. You can also get around by car, but our advice remains to walk around the country streets in order to fully experience the culture of the village.

How to get to Mussomeli

Mussomeli is about 50 km from Agrigento and just under 60 km from Caltanissetta and can be easily reached by car and train.

In driving feel from Agrigento you must take the Highway 189 (direction Palermo) and exit at Acquaviva Platani, while from Caltanissetta you arrive from the Provincial Road 23; traveling on the Palermo – Catania motorway you must instead exit at Tremonzelli or Resuttano, 30 km from Mussomeli.

For those traveling in train instead, it is possible to get off at the Caltanissetta or Agrigento stations and then continue by bus or shuttle to the town, about 30 km away.
