Why visit Milazzo

Milazzo is a municipality in the province of Messina, with its 30.000 inhabitants. The city stands at the beginning of a peninsula about 8 km long in the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Founded by the Greeks and recognized as a Roman civitas, the city was also at the center of history during the First Punic War, and in July 1860 with the arrival of the red shirts in the battle of Milazzo.

The geographical position, the beaches, the seabed, the architectural heritage with which it is endowed constitute a strong attraction.

Things to do in Milazzo

Milazzo is known as the port for the Aeolian Islands, but it offers a delightful and characteristic historic centre, very long beaches that stretch as far as the eye can see. 

One of the most famous destinations is the Pool of Venus, made up of asymmetrical rocks which, thanks to their natural configuration, have created a kind of backwash into which the tide brings water.

In Milazzo we find the Castle largest in Sicily. It is one of the rare examples of military architecture in which the original defensive systems still exist. AND It was built on the area where the first Greek and Roman settlements were then used by the Byzantines and Arabs as well.

Do not miss a visit to the Cathedral of Milazzo, dates from the early XNUMXth century and was built in the style manneristic da Joseph Samona based on a project by Camilliani.

Do not miss the appointments with the festivities of the town. The Eggplant Festival, a real gastronomic event, which presents visitors with the local product and the Feast of St. John the Baptist, which traditionally takes place in June.

How to move in Milazzo

Milazzo is a small town in the province of Messina, moving inside is very simple. 

Being a small town it is very easy to visit it comfortably on foot, but it also offers a taxi service and various ferries leave from Milazzo to move around the Aeolian Islands. If you arrive with your own vehicle, you will be able to move freely to visit the surroundings of the city.

How to get to Milazzo

By car:: from the A20 motorway, in both directions, Palermo or Messina, exit at Milazzo-Isole Eolie and follow the indications towards the centre.

By plane: Catania-Fontanarossa airport, then it is possible to reach Milazzo by bus and vice versa.

By train: Milazzo station is located along all the main southern and east-west railway lines, with continuous connections with the main Italian cities. Upon arrival at the station, it is possible to take line 5 for the center or a taxi.
