Sister Maria Nazarena Majone di Graniti

The Venerable Sister Maria Nazarena Majone of Graniti, province of Messina, was the co-foundress, together with Sant'Annibale Maria di Francia, of the monastic congregation of the Daughters of Divine Zeal.

Graniti is a municipality in the province of Messina, with its 1.000 inhabitants, rises in the valley of the Petrol stream, left tributary of the Alcantara river.

City that gave birth to two relevant exponents such as, Sister Maria Nazarena e Joseph Mazzullo.

Famous for being chosen as the location for some filming The Godfather – Part II, in particular that of the funeral at the beginning of the film which was shot in the creek at the beginning of the village.

Things to do in Graniti

Although the city of Graniti is small, it has a lot to offer.

We can visit the Church of St. Joseph, a very modern structure with its own particular charm.

Do not miss St. Basil's Church, or the mother church of the town, has a particular architecture that dates back to the 1600s. Very suggestive for its interiors which date back, however, to a century later.

Do not miss the appointments with the festivities of the town. Between these, the Cherry Festival, a gastronomic event that presents visitors with the typical local fruit, with about 10 different types of cherries harvested directly in the Valley.

La Patronal Feast of San Sebastiano, takes place every year on the first Sunday of August and as always is eagerly awaited by all the faithful of the community.

How to get around in Graniti

Graniti is a small town in the province of Messina, moving inside is very simple. 

Being a small town it is very easy to visit it comfortably on foot. If you arrive with your own vehicle, you will be able to move freely to visit the surroundings of the city.

How to get to Graniti

Graniti, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, can be easily reached from all the main Sicilian towns. The town is about 70 km from the Strait.

In the car, it is advisable to take the A18 Messina-Catania to the Taormina exit and continue for the next 7,5 km in the direction of Graniti, following the signs; who travels on the train, however, can get off at Taormina Station and continue the journey to the center with the public buses that serve the area.
