The origins of San Mauro Castelverde
Today the territory of San Mauro Castelverde includes olive groves, pastures, woods and ash groves. The village that yes overlooks the Tyrrhenian Sea can boast very distant origins. In fact, it already existed in Norman times, even if it was simply called San Mauro. There are very few certain sources regarding the antiquity of this town and many stories are not very reliable. At the same time, there is no shortage of legends concerning his birth, carried forward to the present day.

Based on some myths handed down, it is said that the first to populate this area were the Greeks, but there are no historical documents or finds capable of ascertaining the veracity of this story. However, it is also not possible to deny it. Another one legend tells of the story that saw as protagonist a nobleman who fell into disgrace, Pietro Verde. The latter chose this territory as his personal refuge. Of Carolingian origins, he chose to settle with them and bought an expanse of land to build a castle, which would later become his home, namely the Green Castle.
Pietro married another local noble, Maria Coco. From their name started the family lineage with the eldest son Hyacinth. Going forward along the history, San Mauro Castelverde was dominated by the Saracens during the medieval age. This period transformed the face of the small village and the culture of the place, with notable changes regarding the traditions and morphology of the territory. The Arabs were then defeated in 1091 by the Normans, who gained control of this area of Sicily.
