The history of the Roman Villa at Terme Vigliatore

La Roman Villa in Terme Vigliatore is a villa dating back toRoman age. Its history goes back a long way, given that the building should date back to the end of the XNUMXnd century BC. It would have arisen in a place that already existed from the Hellenistic age, redeveloped in the thermal sector and carefully enlarged. Some floors with greasy lime and small shards would show their existence already in the imperial era. It is a real archaeological treasure.

The Roman Villa San Biagio was almost destroyed in 365, following a bloody earthquake. Various documents attest to natural events that seriously jeopardized the survival of its structure. During the contemporary age, its expansion was blocked by reports on several occasions to the authorities of those times. Over the centuries, the villa has undergone numerous works, with the actual restoration dating back only to the fifties of the last century, following a very recent discovery.

Various researches have brought to light different rooms of the Roman Villa, especially as regards the patronal residence. In particular, some discoveries allow you to have a complete picture of how people lived in those times, highlighting the salient points of the Roman era. One exhibition space was set up in 1966, to then be used for educational purposes. Furthermore, various devices are active to safeguard the flooring and the protections for the structure's wall edges.

The architecture of the Roman Villa

The Roman Villa San Biagio is a building from square plan shape, surrounded by a large garden. The portico is dotted with eight columns around it. Inside the building, here is the historic room dedicated to triclinium banquet, while towards the south side of the courtyard appears the tamblium, i.e. the main room of the domus used as a representation. Clearly visible is also the thermal area, a bathroom made up of three rooms with cold, warm and hot water. The rooms were heated through the passage of hot air inside special pipes. There is no shortage of ceramics and stuccoes able to furnish the central house.
