Tour of the Valley of the Temples and Piazza Armerina from Taormina: discover the Sicilian heritage
What You Will Experience
Join this tour of Agrigento and Piazza Armerina to explore two of Sicily's most iconic historical sites: the Valley of the Temples and the Villa Romana del Casale.
Located just outside Agrigento, the impressive Valle dei Templi archaeological area is made up of eight separate temples and other ruins, built between 510 BC and 430 BC. They include the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Hercules, the Temple of Olympian Zeus, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Hephaestus, the Temple of Demeter and the Temple of Asclepius. Except for the latter, located on the banks of the Akragas River, the other temples are located on the rocky hills south of the modern city of Agrigento.
The second stage of the tour is Piazza Armerina, immersed in the heart of Sicily, 721 meters above sea level. This very popular tourist resort is renowned for the Villa Romana del Casale, originally a hunting lodge for a Roman patrician in the XNUMXth century AD. Today, the villa houses some of the best preserved Roman mosaics. Extremely vivid and detailed, made mostly by North African master craftsmen, these mosaics depict various subjects, from Homeric adventures and mythological scenes to daily life, including the famous ancient "bikini" portrait of girls. It is a stop not to be missed on your trip to Sicily.
