The Church of San Pietro in Panarea

The Church of San Pietro in Panarea is the Catholic religious building dedicated to the patron saint of the town, in the municipality of Lipari and island ofAeolian archipelago in the province of Messina.

The Church was built in 1880 and the works ended only much later, in 1924. The inhabitants of Panarea, however, have always been devoted to Saint Peter, Patron of the island and protector of fishermen. Every year, the procession that carries the simulacrum of the Saint through the streets of the island leaves from the Parish of San Pietro in Panarea and the faithful turn to him in prayer, especially the fishermen who ask for the intercession of Saint Peter for abundance and security in fishing.

The devotion of the faithful towards St. Peter has led them in the past centuries to actively collaborate in the construction of the Church to be dedicated to the Saint, without worrying about the sacrifices made for their patron.

The Patronal Feast, with liturgical celebrations in the parish, takes place every year on June 29th.
