Brief history of the French beach in Bagheria

The Spiaggia dei Francesi in Bagheria is located inside the fraction of Mongerbino, in a pure and uncontaminated Sicily. Since ancient times, it has always been regarded as a place of absolute relaxation. Its history is closely linked to that of the town of Bagheria, also known by the dialect denominations of Baaria e Bagaria. The first signs relating to this town date back to the VII-III century BC, with the adjacent settlement of Monte Porcara.

However, Bagheria began to have a city center from the mid-seventeenth century, when Prince Giuseppe Branciforte had Palazzo Butera built. As the decades passed, more and more homes were built and inhabited. About a century later Salvatore Branciforti took care of having Corso Butera built, also known as Stratuni and remembered with a marble plaque. At the same time, the Madrice Church was also created, as well as the growing importance of Via Municipio, now called Corso Umberto I, should be underlined.

Furthermore, even today, it is possible to admire two limestone pillars that led to the Villa Palagonia, as well as the palace owned by the Duke of Milazzo, the ancient residence of Queen Maria Carolina of Austria. Much more recent is Via Ciro Scianna, which was once called Corsa Vecchia.
