Origins and history of the Sanctuary of the Holy Crucifix of Castel Bilìci

Il Sanctuary of Castel Bilìci it is inserted in what was one of the most important fiefdoms containing high concentrations of grain. Belonging to the Ventimiglia family, the local castle served as a perfect operational base for agricultural exploitation and today only a few remains of its ancient foundations are visible, scattered in the surrounding area. These testimonies can be seen among the more modern buildings, given that they were incorporated in the growth of the small fiefdom.

The history of the ecclesiastical structure starts from afar, since the first traces date back to the seventeenth century. In that period, the Franciscans of the nearby convent settled at the ancient castle, also assisting the local farmers. Then, the building fell into abandonment until 1918, when six citizens of the locality of Marianopoli bought it to spread the cult of the Holy Crucifix. Over the decades, interest in the Sanctuary has grown thanks to the increase in the number of owners.

The crucifix and other works of art in the Crucifix Sanctuary of Castel Bilìci

The Sanctuary owes its name to the wooden crucifix that the Petralia family gave to the Duchess Maria Fernanda Alvarez, at that time ruler of the fiefdom of Castel Bilìci. The polychrome crucifix was considered a precious gift, of fine workmanship and available in full size. It was forged by very expert hands, which made it a sight for those who behold it.

Very evocative images were and still are engraved on the Crucifix today, such as Christ praying to the Father in heaven in the act preceding his death on the cross. It was created by friar Innocenzio da Petralia, a man of culture and extreme sensitivity for art, as well as a great sculptor. The friar lived between 1591 and 1648. The Sanctuary has a single nave set in the most remote part of the ancient castle.
