The history of the ecclesiastical structure starts from afar, since the first traces date back to the seventeenth century. Then, the building fell into abandonment until 1918, when six citizens of the locality of Marianopoli bought it to spread the cult of the Holy Crucifix. The Sanctuary owes its name to the wooden crucifix that the Petralia family gave to the Duchess Maria Fernanda Alvarez, at that time ruler of the fiefdom of Castel Bilìci.
