La Hazelnut Festival in Sant'Angelo di Brolo it's a gastronomic event which adds a unique flavor to the Sicilian summer: that of the hazelnut and the many products prepared with the tasty dried fruit. The event takes place in month of August in Sant'Angelo di Brolo, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Messina and involves several squares in the town.

The evening's program includes many tastings at the stands set up outdoors, to discover the countless preparations that can be made with hazelnuts and get to know the best traditional local recipes, but also the avant-garde of Sicilian cooking. At the end of the evening, all participants are invited to go wild on the dance floor, with dances and musical performances organized for the party.

The treasures of the land of the Nebrodi, including hazelnuts, have always been the basis of the local economy and to celebrate them and make them known even beyond the regional borders, Sant'Angelo di Brolo invites tourists during the summer season to taste all the flavors of the village.

The History of the Hazelnut Festival in Sant'Angelo di Brolo

The Hazelnut Festival in Sant'Angelo di Brolo was born in 2005 thanks to the collaboration of the Municipality of Sant'Angelo di Brolo with the Falchi Association and the Pro Loco, with the participation of large shopping centers in the area.

The festival was created to make known to the general public one of main local products and at the same time reinforcing what was once the main sector of Brolo's economy, namely the hazelnut cultivation and the sale of based products nuts. At the same time, the event offers participants all the taste of a 0 km product, combined with the creativity of local cuisine, which offers hazelnuts in many dishes and preparations.

The Hazelnut Festival in Sant'Angelo di Brolo takes place on August 16th, starting from 20:00 with the reception of visitors and the opening of the tasting stand. Later, the evening is enlivened by the musical show which starts at 22:00.

The stands are set up in the squares of the historic centre: the main squares where you can taste the hazelnuts and typical products are Piazza S. Savior of the sixteenth century or the Mother Church; in the village there are also several museums, such as the Museum of Sacred Art and Museum of Angels, to visit before dedicating yourself to local flavors.

If instead you spend a few more days in Sant'Angelo di Brolo, you can organize a tour of the area, from Nebrodi Park up to the sea.

The Nebrodi Park to the south can be reached in about an hour and a half by car and will allow you to observe animals in their natural habitat, such as foxes and weasels, but also many plant species in addition to the Mediterranean maquis; to the north you will find the beaches of the Tyrrhenian coast, such as that of Brolo or the beach of San Gregorio near Capo d'Orlando, the latter is a destination that we recommend to those looking for a quiet and uncrowded beach.

In addition to hazelnuts, lovers of good food will also find all the hazelnuts in Sant'Angelo di Brolo Nebrodi products, such as black pig salami and ham or Nebrodi provola, among the most popular cheeses in Sicily, to be purchased directly from farms. In the best restaurants in the area you can instead enjoy traditional dishes such as caponatina, stuffed chicken or Sicilian rolls.

How to get to Sant'Angelo di Brolo

Sant'Angelo di Brolo, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, is an easily accessible destination both by car and by train: by car, take the A20 Messina-Buonfornello to the exit for Brolo-Capo d'Orlando est, 5 km from the village; on the train, get off at Patti-S. Piero Patti, where you will find buses and shuttles waiting for you to take you to Sant'Angelo di Brolo.
