La Ciauna Festival aims to celebrate each, a typical Valdina dessert, which is prepared with a filling made from sugar, honey, cinnamon and sheep's ricotta enclosed between two sheets of medal-shaped shortcrust pastry topped with a decorative cord.
It usually comes accompanied by a glass of Zibibbo, Sicilian wine with a liqueur-like characteristic.

History of the Ciauna Festival

The first edition of the Sagra della Ciauna was held in 2013 to introduce as many people as possible to the aforementioned sweet delight.
It is prepared by the women of the Valdinesi community, always ready to proudly carry on the local customs.
According to oneancient tradition, each must be consumed at the end of Lent, as a sign of penance, starting from Holy Saturday.

When the Ciauna Festival takes place

The Sagra della Ciauna lasts two days and takes place in Valdina, a town located in the province of Messina, usually in the May.
To know the precise dates, it is advisable to visit the Facebook page called Sagra della Ciauna.

Where the Ciauna Festival takes place

The Sagra della Ciauna takes place in Valdina, a small agricultural center located 250 meters above sea level.

What to do during the Ciauna Festival

The Sagra della Ciauna is without a shadow of a doubt an unmissable event dedicated to gluttony, because this dessert, although not as well known as Sicilian cannoli and cassata, is truly a delicacy to be discovered and loved from the first to the last bite.
The tasting is also enlivened by musical shows, singing and dancing in the square.
Once the two days of celebrations are over, it is recommended to visit the beauties of Valdina, Starting from Church of San Pancrazio Bishop Martyr, located in via Perre.
This building, dedicated to patron saint, is easily recognizable by the imposing light pink structure.
The simulacrum is kept inside carried in procession every year along the main roads of the town.

Another place worth mentioning is the Castle of Roccavaldina, as it dominates the entire inhabited center and offers a suggestive panorama.
If you move around, you will instead find the Historic village Pantano, located at rometta.
Before falling into its current state of abandonment, it was inhabited until the end of the Second World War, after which a gradual process of depopulation began, which was completed during the XNUMXs due to its rather inconvenient hillside position on the Peloritani Mountains.
