In the middle of the Caltanissetta countryside it rises sommatino , a small town also known as city ​​of sulfur , given the presence of several sulfur mines in the immediate vicinity. Not far from the historic center is the green lung of the city, the Falcone-Borsellino urban park. The municipality of Sommatino decided to open this green area on 19 July 1994, to satisfy the growing demand of fellow citizens for a place where they can relax, walk with the children and spend pleasant days away from the chaos of the city centre.
The decision to dedicate the park to Falcone and Borsellino was the homage of all citizens to those who, even at the cost of their lives, tried in every way to free Sicily from the grip of the mafia. To commemorate their sacrifice, but also to offer a place for recreation to the inhabitants of Sommatino, the Falcone - Borsellino urban park was founded.

In Sommatino, precisely at the exit for Riesi, there is the Falcone - Borsellino urban park, a point of reference for the citizens of Sommatino, but also for the nearby cities and for those who are in this city for tourism. A well-kept green area of ​​a fair size where you can stroll peacefully with your family or take your pets for a walk. The park has large gardens , pedestrian routes in stone, also passable by the disabled and wide shadow areas created from tropical and native plants, under which to take a nap or find refreshment during the hot summer days.
The perfect place to go for a morning run or some physical activity at sunset, away from the busy streets of the center and in complete safety since access is forbidden to means of transport. Different available play areas in which to entertain the children and let them play peacefully while parents and grandparents relax on a bench nearby to read a good book. There is even a small area where some have been installed mechanical rides to entertain the little ones even during the weekend when there is no school.

Sommatino is an enchanting city and is on a human scale, which can be traveled far and wide even without a car, in order to better appreciate the late medieval imprint of the historic centre. Steep hills, narrow winding streets, and houses huddled together is what the central part of the city has to offer, but there is also a lot of noteworthy architecture which is definitely worth a visit.
Near the main course of Sommatino there is the old one Town Hall , the former prison and one of the most beautiful churches in the country, the Mother Church of Santa Margherita . Built in 1751, inside it preserves some of the most important artistic works of Sommatino, such as the altars of Santa Barbara and Santa Margherita, the frescoes by the Palmese painter Domenico Provenzani and the statue of the Madonna d'Itria which is the oldest monument of the country.
Returning to the historic centre, next to what was the Palazzo dei Principi Lanza di Trabia, the Civic Tower which is a more recent makeover of an old watchtower that once stood in the same place.
Il Museum of Natural History and Mining Art illustrates how the town of Sommatino and the surrounding areas have evolved from a geological point of view, through an exhibition dedicated to minerals and rocks. There is also an area dedicated to the sulfur mining practiced in these areas, with an exhibition containing the tools used by the miners. Finally, the Ethnographic Museum which is located in the Palazzo Cigno-Costantino and which tells the story of the city through artifacts and documents that speak of the past.

Sommatino is easily reachable from all over Sicily, thanks to excellent road connections and a convenient bus service that connects the town with the main cities of the island.
Who comes in auto from Agrigento you must take the SS640 towards Caltanissetta, exit at Canicattì north and continue until you reach the Delia exit and then Sommatino. From Palermo and Catania, take the A19 motorway and exit at Caltanissetta, continue on the SS626 for Gela and exit at Riesi continuing towards Sommatino. From Licata just take the SS626 junction towards Ravanusa and then exit at Sommatino.
All those who do not want to reach Sommatino by car, can use the bus numbers of the Sais Trasporti line, which connect Sommatino with all of Sicily.
