The Onion Festival is an appointment that every year attracts many gourmands who wish to try the specialty of the area, namely the Busacchinara Onion. During the event the onion is the great protagonist, delicious to eat raw for its softness and juiciness but obviously also to be used in many different preparations. Participants will be able to taste the onion prepared in many different ways, learn how to cook it during the cooking show but also attend the musical and cabaret shows that are organized to make the appointment even more entertaining. The first edition of the Onion Festival was held in 2003 and has been organized every year since then. The event was designed to promote not only a product that is an excellence of the area but also to raise awareness of the beauties of the village. The appointment was strongly desired by the municipal authorities who in this way try to attract a very large public to the village which also has numerous attractions to show to its public. On the other hand, the production of Busacchinara is historic, so it was a natural choice to focus on this excellence.

The Onion Festival is held every year in Augustusually in the second half of the month. The date may vary as it is not linked to any religious holiday, even if the appointment is included in the program White Night in Bisacquino.

The Onion Festival is organized in the historic village of the town, usually in the very central Via Decano Di Vincenti and in the surrounding areas.

What to do during the Onion Festival in Bisacquino

The peculiarity of Bisacquino, which catches the eye of the visitor, is its Middle Eastern look, linked to a long period of Arab domination. The most representative monument is certainly the mother church which is related to the cult of Saint John. The structure overlooks the beautiful Piazza Triona, totally in Baroque style, and it is noted that it stands on the ashes of a previous sixteenth-century church, of which only the bell tower remains. Inside the church you can admire the beautiful stuccos by Serpotta and a wooden crucifix which was instead made by Bellacera.

Just outside the historic center, however, is the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna del Balzo, built in the seventeenth century, which is located in the immediate vicinity of another sacred place which is the Abbey dedicated to the Madonna del Bosco di Calatamauro, of which, however, only the remains can still be visited. The civic Museum and Clock Museum finally, they collect all the remains of the village's past, such as some finds from the Greek-Punic era.

How to get to Bisacquino

People who wish to take part in the Sagra a Bisacquino can reach the village from Palermo along the SS624. From Catania, on the other hand, it is necessary to take the A19 and from Messina first the A20 and then the E90. The most suitable road for those departing from Messina and Agrigento is the SS115 while from Trapani the A29 and then the E933 are to be preferred first. From Syracuse the best road is the one that provides for the journey first of the A19 and then the E932, finally from Enna the SS640.

Bisacquino does not have its own train station so those who want to move by this means of transport will have to refer to those of Salemi Gibellina or Roccapalumba - Alia or Cammarata. Finally, it is also possible to choose the buses that are made available by the AST company.
