History of the Museum of Sacred Art in Naso

The Museum of Sacred Art in Naso is located in environments known as the Catacombs of San Cono which are connected with the overlying Temple. The Museum of Sacred Art in Naso has seen recent renovations so that the spaces were recovered from the state of decay in which they found themselves due to past neglect, restoring an indisputable luster to the entire urban context. Wanted by Diocese of Patti, the Museum of Sacred Art in Naso brings together a set of works that refer to liturgical furnishings sent by ancient churches present in the city as well as other interesting pieces from other religious areas present in the area.

Architecture and works of art present at the Museum of Sacred Art in Naso

The Museum of Sacred Art in Naso occupies a museum itinerary of approximately 260 meters which has been rationally divided into four sections.

The wooden works, created by anonymous craftsmen who were able to respond to requests from the local religious community, are placed in the first section where some stupendous majolicas are also exhibited which testify to the skill of the Naso majolica created in a period of time ranging from the fifteenth to the seventeenth century.

The second section houses ancient sacred vestments and a bronze bell to demonstrate the creativity and skill existing in artisan workshops located within the Nebroid territory. It will be possible to admire the value of objects belonging to remote brotherhoods and pious associations, testifying to the religious sense that characterized the Nasense territory at that time.

The third section of the Museum of Sacred Art in Naso groups together stone works and canvases among which stands out a wooden panel of rare refinement depicting the Madonna with sleeping Child and dating back to the first half of the sixteenth century, ascribed to the circle of the Dutchman Joos vas Cleve. Also noteworthy are two ovals attributable to the Catanian Olivio Sozzi of the early eighteenth century.

Located in several small rooms connected to each other, the fourth section is the one that collects silver furnishings made up of sacred elements such as reliquaries, crucifixes, pyxes, chalices, monstrances, buckets, censers and more. This collection allows us to appreciate the creativity and skill of unknown artisan artists who decorated and chiseled works requested by the local communities where the sense of religiosity that characterized them is evident.
