Il Museum of Sicilian Costume and Fashion in Mirto, located inside a building once owned by the Cupani family, exhibits a collection made up of over 1500 artifacts including lace, accessories, bodices, bags, footwear, fabrics, dressing gowns, hats and dresses.
Each piece, donated by private users, has also been ordered on the basis of an accurate chronological order and is intended to bear witness to the development of the Sicilian way of dressing over the course of more than two centuries.
The flagship of this permanent exhibition consists in showing not only the products worn by people belonging to the more affluent social classes, but also those worn by the humble social classes.

History of the Costume Museum in Mirto

The Costume Museum in Mirto was born in the village of the same name in 1988 and this initiative was taken by the Municipal Administration, when it acquired and renovated Cupane Palace.
The original project pursued the aim of creating an anthropological museum, but when the director Giuseppe Miraudo he started donating his substantial collection of Sicilian accessories and clothes, a course change has occurred.
This initiative also served as an incentive for the illustrious families, since, in order to see their clothes exhibited, they began to donate them to the structure.

Architecture and works of art inside the Costume Museum in Mirto

Once you have logged in to the Sicilian Costume and Fashion Museum, you can do nothing but enter the various rooms that house both the various clothes and the paintings and vintage photographs ready to provide further explanations about the respective wear.
Among the most significant clothes are those left by designer Salvatore Ferragamo, from Teresa Pugliatti e Ferlazzo Natoli dating back to the nineteenth century.
As far as the sixties, seventies and eighties are concerned, those belonging to Maria Rosaria Annino, as they include two designer dresses Coco Chanel, wedding dress created by Valentino, a Sixties evening dress studded with emerald green sequins, a two-piece suit made up of a skirt and bodice covered in polka dots Paco Rabanne.
Finally, the section reserved for Mimma Ferraro, designer from Messina of which the museum owns a selection that spans thirty years of his career.

In addition to admiring the beautiful clothes inside the Costume Museum in Mirto, it is advisable to visit the oldest part of the town, where the Mother Church, sacred building dedicated to Holy Mary of the Assumption.
Here there are numerous works of art, including the statue of the Madonna della Catena created by the Gagini school plus the simulacrum of the patron saint of the locality, i.e. Santa Tecla.

How is it possible to get to the Costume Museum in Mirto

The Costume Museum is located in Mirto, in Via Cupane, 64.
Mirto is a small village of not even a thousand inhabitants which is part of the province of Messina and, if you leave the latter city by car, the journey takes approximately one hour and fifteen minutes.
The roads to go are the A20 and E90 motorways.
Unfortunately there are no means of public transport that lead to this municipality.
