In the heart of the historic center of Castrofilippo is the Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario, an elegant and refined building of seventeenth-century origin.

This is the main place of worship in the city, as well as being an important point of interest for the whole area, capable of handing down the history of the area and the most ancient traditions of Castrofilippo.

All the most iconic customs of the area have passed through these parts, from anniversaries to the more occasional events, each of which has been able to offer its contribution to the promotion of Sicilian culture.

History of the Mother Church of Castrofilippo

The construction of the Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario was completed in 1634, strongly desired by Maurice Monreale, which at that time was the Duke of Castrofilippo. The first building was characterized by a small temple, decidedly tiny compared to the current building.

A century after its construction, the Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario was in a degraded state, due to poor maintenance. Therefore, it was decided to carry out a substantial restoration, to give the city of Castrofilippo a well-kept place of worship.
The actual expansion took place starting from 1848, in which the roof was raised and new additions and many decorations were installed, from the stuccos to the splendid paintings that can still be admired today.

During the middle of XX century the entire flooring, now deteriorated by time, was changed to give the Mother Church of Castrofilippo a new, more modern and elegant style.

Architecture of the Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario in Castrofilippo

The Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario has soft colors throughout its structure, which is simple and elegant at the same time. The facade is rectangular in shape and develops in height. The entrance portal covers a large part of the prospectus, on which there are various engravings.
The body of the building is included within two pilasters of bricks, a detail that is often repeated also in the frames of the portal and of the rectangular window placed above it.

You enter the Mother Church of Maria SS del Rosario with a flight of steps which places it on a higher level from the square in front, next to which there is a small Obelisco fenced.

Behind the Mother Church of Castrofilippo is its monumental bell tower, clearly taller than the main building, from which it recalls the same architectural style. The bell tower shows itself as a quadrangular tower, culminating in a bell cell enriched by pilasters and Corinthian capitals.
