One of the areas of Catania most loved by the people of Catania themselves, but not only, it is Ognina, the suggestive seaside neighborhood located in the northern part of the city, easily reachable from the historic center of Catania given the numerous connections between these two areas. In the Everyna district is also found Catania waterfront, which is among the main points of interest in the city, known not only for being a meeting point for young people and families during the summer period, but also because it hosts, every month, the Lungomare Liberato, the event that intends to promote the territory and the street arts, which find in this location the perfect environment in which to be disseminated.

History of the Ognina seafront

The Ognina district has very ancient origins, so much so that a historian once stood in this area fishing village equipped with a small port. The ancient urban settlement was populated mainly by fishermen, which still represents one of the most widespread professions in this neighborhood today, being able to admire, during the nights, many boats going out to sea with fishing trips that guarantee fresh fish to the entire city of Catania.
Il name Ognina derived from Longane, which is the term used to indicate the ancient river that crossed this village in ancient times, of which, however, there are no longer any traces, as it was totally buried by the lava flows which struck this part of the city between 1329 and 1381.

What to see in the Ognina neighborhood of Catania

The Ognina neighborhood shows some of the most scenic points of interest in all of Catania, starting with its monuments, which include the splendid Church of the Madonna di Ognina, to which the second most important religious festival in the city is dedicated. A very short distance away is the Port of Ognina, located near one of many Solarium present along the coastal stretch of Ognina. Solariums are structures placed above the cliff, where it is possible to stop to tan and to access the clear waters below, so as to be able to take a bath in one of the most enchanting points of the city. From the Ognina district it is also easy to get to Saint John Li Cuti, in which one is found black sand beach which makes this place magical and unique.

The Catania seafront

The Ognina district is entirely crossed by the Lungomare di Catania, famous for hosting the only one bicycle path of the city, as well as being equipped with large squares in which to practice sports or to enjoy moments of leisure. Here are, in fact, facilities that host a basketball court it's a Luna Park, while, in the opposite side, it is possible to find a large number of bars and restaurants among the most renowned in the city, where you can stop to enjoy all the gastronomic excellences of the Sicilian cooking.

How to get to the Ognina neighborhood of Catania

The Ognina neighborhood is widely served by all local public transport, being able to reach its immediate vicinity both with the AMT Catania buses and with the Catania Metro connections. Given the presence of the Catania Railway Station, you can also reach the city by train, while those traveling by plane can land at the Fontanarossa Airport in Catania.
