After the terrible earthquake that struck all of Sicily, in particular the province of Messina towards the end of the seventeenth century, this structure also suffered damage that called into question its solidity with many signs of possible collapse. For these reasons, the ancient mother church was completely demolished and rebuilt from scratch with a larger plan and probably with interesting architectural elements. In 1783, unfortunately, following a new terrible earthquake that hit Messina and Catania, there was new damage, this time dealt with immediately thanks also to the intervention of the State. The history of the Mother Church of San Piero Patti was constantly characterized by cataclysms and structural problems, until the last years of the nineteenth century.
