For a week San Vito Lo Capo it becomes the ideal scenario for kite lovers who bring a little of their magic to one of the most beautiful bays in Sicily. It is the synthesis of the wonder that adults and children feel when they watch the show which brings to life dozens of flying kites in the shape of animals, flowers, men and fantasy figures. During the event, the "Wind garden", a open-air museum with works of art that move with the wind and various art workshops for children.

The Festival in fact represents the desire for freedom and play at all ages and therefore involves the involvement of the little ones, while adults can take lessons kitesurf. A few meters from the beach the stands offer it Sicilian street food and crafts of the territory, while in the evening there is no shortage of musical and artistic performances to entertain guests. The highlight of the event is the night flight of kites.

The history of San Vito lo Capo and the International Kite Festival

San Vito lo Capo it's a fishing village which is located on the north-western coast of Sicily, between the Zingaro Nature Reserve , Monte Cofano Reserve. The history of the town is linked to the legend of Vito, a young Roman who in the XNUMXth century AD tried to escape Christian persecution by taking refuge on the Mount Erice. The escape, however, fails to save Vito who dies as a martyr and therefore a chapel is built in his memory, around which a village, San Vito Lo Capo, arose in the 700th century.

Today the town is a highly appreciated tourist center animated by visitors attracted by the beauty of the area. The International Kite Festival it is one of the many events organized by the Municipality to promote tourism and spread messages of peace and freedom. The kermesse conceived in 2009, is a great event that sees the participation of delegations of kite enthusiasts from various countries in addition to Italy such as Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Great Britain, Indonesia, Switzerland, and the USA.

The beach is the hub of the International Kite Festival, but a few steps from the coast in the heart of the historic center of the town, is the most representative building of the village, the Sanctuary of San Vito. The foundations were built in 300 AD in memory of the martyr Vitus and today the church has a fortress structure with a square tower, thick walls and cracks along the walls as in some eras it is used as a military stronghold.

On the western tip, a few kilometers from the town, there are the remains of the ancient one Tonnara of San Vito lo Capo, built in 1411 and abandoned in 1965, while on the road to Macari is the Chapel of Santa Crescenzia, dedicated to the nurse of San Vito and built in the XIII century. Natural landscape enthusiasts can visit the Zingaro Nature Reserve , Monte Cofano Reserve which with beaches, sea and land caves and paths between the mountains represent a harmonious encounter between sea and mountains.

How to reach the beach of San Vito lo Capo

From Trapani take by car Via del Legno in the direction of Via Madonna di Fatima on the SP20. Continue along the road and take the SP18 towards via Regina Margherita in San Vito Lo Capo.
Follow the signs for Via Litoranea Lungomare where the beach is located. From Messina take the A20 from viale Boccetta and follow the road towards the SS731 to Alcamo. Take the Castellammare del Golfo exit and continue on the SS731 until you reach the SS187 where you follow the signs for via Litoranea Lungomare.
From Agrigento take the SS115 to Villaseta and continue in the direction of the E90 towards the SS731 to Alcamo. Take the Castellammare del Golfo exit and continue on the SS731 up to the SS187 where you continue on via Litoranea Lungomare.
