Among the happiest carnival events in Sicily, the Carnival in Adrano, in the province of Catania, is one of these, given its charge of colour, music and popular participation not only by citizens but also by visitors living in nearby municipalities and even further away.

From Shrove Thursday, the very central Piazza Umberto becomes the driving force of a cheerful vitality that branches out around the other main streets of the city and for the entire period in question, i.e. until Shrove Tuesday, the day before Ash Wednesday which marks the end of this event.

History of the Carnival in Adrano

It is a certainty that it is an event with deep roots in time given that it dates back to the 60s of the last century, when in the 'fat' days of that time we could already witness mask parades in the streets and people enjoyed wandering around the stalls full of recreational and gastronomic products of Catania cuisine for adults and children.

Any examples of these culinary products? Arancini (or arancine, known as Palermo-style), 'cassatelle' sweets, popcorn and cotton candy as well as anything that can be easily consumed in the hand while standing walk around enjoying the party.

As you can imagine, Carnival is inevitably a moment of celebration for everyone, even for those who work in the world of commerce and gastronomic venues such as bars and restaurants.

Over the decades, the Carnival in Adrano has evolved with the times while maintaining those popular traditions that are a fundamental ingredient of these festive days.

For example, the twinning was renowned in 2002 and 2003 with the Rio de Janeiro Carnival, the South American city that has the most famous Carnival in the world, furthermore, in 2020, therefore in very recent times, the Carioca style was revived in the carnival in Adrano thanks to the participation, among the various artists, of the singer and dancer Cecilia gayle.
