Origins and history of the Pizzo Muletta Caves

The Caves of Pizzo Muletta contain a very interesting story. The area showcases various testimonies of strong archaeological and anthropological significance and is still being studied by experts.
It seems that the rocks rose from the sea about two and a half million years ago, during the Sicilian orogeny period. It is probable that the complex was one cliff in full operation, with exposed caves in perfect alignment with the marine area and rich in evident fossils.

Le Pizzo Muletta and Capaci caves they were already visited in the prehistoric period, to then be populated during the archaic, classical and Hellenistic eras. Over the millennia, they have been flanked by karst cavities placed in the mountain peaks, distinguished by the Mediterranean scrub.

The caves are still today an authentic Capaci symbol and are located along a rocky coast of limestone origins. How to get to Capaci

To reach the Caves in Capaci, simply take the A29 motorway and exit at Capaci-Isola delle Femmine or at Carini, both located about 2 kilometers from the destination.

By train, the railway stations of Francia and Piraineto are 7-8 kilometers away from the city centre.
