History of the place

The name derives from the fact that in ancient times there was a warehouse that was used as a rest stop for those traveling along the coast. This area, belonging to the plain of nearby Mascali, has never been taken into consideration for real urbanization as it was an area that was not very suitable for hosting a resident community due to a marshy area - the so-called Mascali lake – that from Marina di Scottone was propagated to this day Sant'Anna in the territory of Fiumefreddo di Sicilia.

Obviously the putrid stagnant waters were extremely malarial also due to a small cone of volcanic nature which overflowed with sulfurous magma near the stretch called della Hip. Volcanic cone that was formed following an earthquake that occurred at the end of the XNUMXth century and which vanished, reabsorbed by the ground, in the mid-XNUMXth century again due to another earthquake.
This was the reason why until then, Fondacello had remained only a very small country village, located within the territory where there was only a small church.

The reclamation of the area which took place between the end of XIX century and the beginning of the XX, changed things profoundly so that the population of the ancient rural village, moved en masse to the navy and starting to mutate into a fishing community that replaced that of farmers.
