La Feast of St. Calogero it is one of the most important religious celebrations of Agrigento, like the Feast of San Gerlando, patron saint of the city.
This festival has very ancient origins, dating back to the sixth century. San Calogero is revered for being the only one, during a plague, to look for food for the sick and for those who, out of fear, did not leave their homes. He lived as a hermit, preaching on Monte Kronio, near Sciacca. His memory is still alive thanks to the many miracles attributed to him.
When and where the event takes place
La Feast of St. Calogero is celebrated between the first two Sundays in July, with eight days of festivities. The activities take place mainly between the Sanctuary of San Calogero and historic center of Agrigento, which is carefully set up for the occasion.
What to do during the Festa San Calogero Agrigento
Already a few days before the start of the festival, Agrigento lights up with bright arches and comes alive with bands singing popular songs. Several stalls offer typical products e local crafts.
The first Sunday is characterized by a solemn religious procession which recalls the journey of San Calogero during the plague.
