Consequently, he decided to build a castle on the top of the hill of the ancient city. According to legend, walls built during the day tended to mysteriously collapse during the night. With these premises, the count had their foundations installed deeper.

During the works, a fresco resembling the image of the Virgin Mary with the child was found. She immediately declared it a miracle, with the word spreading throughout the country. The count was also persuaded by the people to build a church along the route, dedicated to the Madonna of the Castle. The related statue of the Madonna del Castello was sculpted in marble by the sculptor Antonello Gagini towards the end of the fifteenth century.
