In the eight days preceding the festival, every evening one is made torchlight procession to accompany the procession who triumphantly carries a small crucifix, an identical copy of the one that will be the protagonist on the first Sunday of July, during the solemn torchlight procession, together with a relic of the cross of the Passion. La legend tells that a shepherd from the Gratteri area had carved a crucifix in his spare time. When only the face was missing, the shepherd fell asleep inside a cave and dreamed of Jesus asking him why he hadn't yet proceeded to sculpt the face. When he woke up, he found with horror that the crucifix had changed its appearance and Jesus had a full face, so he ran away in fear. Some time later, 12 wayfarers found the crucifix in the cave and decided to take it downstream but, as they descended the hill, the crucifix became bigger and heavier, so much so that they were forced to leave it in the church of San Michele Arcangelo in Lascari.
