Visit to the Cathedral of Sant'Agata di Militello: the history of the place

La Church of Our Lady of Sorrows of Carmel it was built towards the end of the 2000th century and was completely restored in XNUMX to bring it back to its original appearance.
Its origin is due to the will of the family of the Gallego princes, already owners of the adjacent castle, next to which the church was built to become the family chapel. In fact, its interior is structured precisely to accommodate the entire family of princes and keep it away from prying eyes: for this purpose, in fact, a window was created inside the presbytery protected by an inlaid wooden grate behind which the prince and his court could attend the religious function without being seen by the other faithful in the church. Over time, then, what was born as a private chapel was then not only enlarged but also enriched with works of art, frescoes and much more, until it was awarded the title of Mother Church and, therefore, of Duomo .

The architecture and any works of art present in the Cathedral of Sant'Agata di Militello

From an architectural point of view, a visit to the Cathedral of Sant'Agata di Militello will truly conquer everyone for its beauty.
Its external facade, which is made in neoclassical style and with white stone that has been left exposed, it was designed in a monumental perspective so it is extremely imposing and is inspired by the great Catholic cathedrals. The double order of Corinthian style columns and the mosaic representing the Holy Family stand out. Also note the bell gable , clock tower, slightly secluded.
The entrance to the church, on the other hand, is accessible through a wooden door that leads to a central and single nave with a rectangular plan, at the end of which is the presbytery which is raised on a short staircase made up of five steps and surmounted by a triumphal arch. In the presbytery there is also the famous window with a wooden grate which was used to prevent the people from seeing the princes during the celebration of mass, a device used above all in periods of great popular discontent, to prevent riots from breaking out. On the sides of the presbytery, finally, there are three altars which are made entirely of stucco and are inserted in as many bays decorated with very lively motifs, truly a peculiarity for structures of this type. Finally, the ceiling is richly decorated with polychrome marble, to make the overall view even more suggestive.

What you can do around or inside the Cathedral of Sant'Agata di Militello

A visit to the Cathedral of Sant'Agata di Militello is not to be missed also because the interiors present a series of works of art that make them even more particular.
The painting that depicts the Madonna del Carmelo and which is the work of the painter Francesco Nachera di Patti who made it towards the end of the nineteenth century certainly deserves a more in-depth look. From the same period is also another painting, this time depicting Sant'Agata and Santa Lucia, which is instead the work of Antonio Balsamo, a Capuchin father of Motta Sant'Anastasia. The painting that represents the Madonna of the Rosary, on the other hand, is not by a precise author but scholars agree in affirming that it is a French school and that the work was created in the same period as the previous paintings. There are other works, however, which are worthy of attention, such as the internal organ created by Pietro La Grassa of Palermo and dating back to around 1870 or the Urn of the Dead Jesus which is certainly more recent as it was carved in 1951. Finally, there are the statues among which the one of the Immaculate Conception stands out which was created by Bagnasco Figlio and which was positioned inside one of the chapels of the altar, whose sculpture dates back to 1887. Of the same author also that of St. Joseph with the Child which is from a few years earlier, made in 1883.
