History of the Mother Church of San Pietro a Cassaro

Not much is known about its origins, however it is reasonable to believe, according to some historical reconstructions, that the first construction of the Mother Church of San Pietro was carried out during the late sixteenth century, in the same point where the current one stands.
A first renovation took place a century after its birth, as reported in a document which attests to the existence of an extension for the installation of 5 altars, which became 6 a few decades later.

The main altar was named after San Giuseppe, as he held the role of Patron Saint of Cassaro during that era.
Il 1693 earthquake it also struck Cassaro and its most iconic buildings, including the Mother Church of San Pietro, whose reconstruction began immediately, giving life to the current building which we can still admire in all its artistic beauty.

Following the eighteenth-century reconstruction, the Mother Church of San Pietro acquired its current appearance, characterized by a beautiful Sicilian Baroque style.
Over time, various improvements have been made to the building, both to expand the rooms and to embellish its aesthetics. The most important change was the replacement of the facade, carried out in 1921, due to the dangerous signs of collapse that characterized it.

Inside you will notice a traditional plan with three naves, separated by arches. There are also several artwork, among paintings and statues depicting the main religious figures of the local cult.

The Mother Church of San Pietro is located in the heart of historic center of Cassaro. Reaching the municipality to visit this and many other points of interest, such as the Frassati Nature Trail, is really very simple.
