History of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima degli Angeli in Motta d'Affermo

The building of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima degli Angeli was built during Three hundred, to then be completely redone in 1453, with an important restoration work that enlarged the rooms and gave it a style that was decidedly richer in detail. The date 1453 is perpetually imprinted behind the church, on a wall that features this engraving and testifies to the end of the works.

Further improvements also arrived in 1647 and on several occasions during eighteenth century, with the intention of continuing to expand the structure and improve its style, which from time to time showed itself to be increasingly graceful and elegant.
The current façade was built in the early nineteenth century, based on a project by the architect Marvuglia, who gave the building a new look, giving it a totally new style that certainly will not go unnoticed when you find yourself passing through the center of Motta d'Affermo.

The building of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima degli Angeli is shown with a facade rich in details, in which columns and pilasters stand out across the entire façade, giving it a decidedly more imposing appearance.
The columns are placed as if to protect the great one wooden entrance portal which, in addition to covering almost the entire height of the façade, also features various engravings and geometric decorations.

As soon as you enter inside you will surely appreciate the structure a three naves, which are divided from each other by long rows of columns made with local stone. The walls are full of paintings, with canvases coming from the ingenuity of numerous Sicilian and non-Sicilian artists, to which are added beautiful works in Carrara marble, such as baptismal font.

Of the end ofnineteenth century is the bell tower located to the right of the Mother Church of Maria Santissima degli Angeli, from which it inherits the same architectural style.
