OnFavignana Island, in the Egadi archipelago in the province of Trapani, between transparent waters and imposing quarries, mountains that tell the story and dream beaches overlooking the Mediterranean, the village also shows its treasures to the visitor: the Mother Church of Favignana, consecrated to Maria Santissima Immacolata, is a real jewel of the eighteenth century.

Around the beginning of the eighteenth century, by virtue of the increase in population on the island, King Philip IV granted the Marquis of Pallavicino to build a large church, a work that the Marquis built with his own funds and with the help of the architect Don Gambina, finishing the construction of the Mother Church of Favignana in 1764. Towards the end of the century, moreover, the bell tower was finally fixed, with the addition of the first bell of the Church, which in 1792 emitted its first tolling. Two more bells were then added to the Church, one in 1869 and one recently. In 1977, however, the first eighteenth-century bell, which was no longer functional, was replaced.

The Mother Church of Favignana holds great treasures, but also some secrets, such as the cemetery in use in the XNUMXth century and definitively walled up during the Second World War.

The architecture of the Mother Church of Favignana and the works it houses

La Mother Church of Favignana it is a building with a great upward thrust and basically presents itself with an advanced central body, from which the ocher-colored main façade looks out, and a slightly more extended set back body, with side entrances.

The main façade is simple and not very decorated, we find only the main door and the window above it; unique charms granted tobaroque art, are the arch that frames the door with the coat of arms in relief and the window-niche on the upper floor, from which a statue looks out.

Upon entering, the Church reveals a great and almost unexpected wealth of decorations, stuccos, Corinthian columns and capitals, chandeliers and sacred furnishings, which fill the single large nave.

Inside, statues and paintings from the eighteenth century and a wooden crucifix.
