La Mother Church of Calatafimi, dedicated to San Silvestro Papa has origins dating back to the XII century. It was named after protector of Calatafimi Segesta and was originally a very small church. Taking a look at popular traditions, it tells of the almost legendary events of San Silvestro, who in ancient times had protected Calatafimi from the attacks of rebel Muslims. Over the decades, the town experienced continuous expansion and the need was felt to act accordingly.

Thus it was that the Mother Church of Catalafimi was considerably enlarged starting from the fifteenth century, acquiring a completely different aspect. The changes were made until the eighteenth century, making the parish so large that it could contain very important popular assemblies. For example, it was perfect for hosting the popular assembly that had Maria Santissima di Giubino elected as Patroness of the locality thanks to her protection against grasshoppers.

The Mother Church of Calatafimi Segesta originally had a facade of Renaissance origins, but after several interventions it has totally changed its appearance. The parish has inside three naves supported by several columns and has managed to preserve a certain polyptych form, typical of the early sixteenth century. In the central part of the church, visitors and believers can admire the presence of the statue depicting the Madonna and Child Jesus together with the Holy Spirit.

On the left side, however, you can see the statue representing Pope San Silvestro together with San Michele Arcangelo. On the right, here are the busts depicting San Nicolò and Sant'Antonio Abbate.
