Mother Church of the country and one of the oldest religious buildings in the village, the Church of the Assumption of Galati Mamertino it was built in the XNUMXth century with the participation of some of the most important local artists and masters of the time.

At the time of its construction, it became a baronial building of worship and today it is the new Mother Church of Galati, in place of the old Church of the Rosario.

The architecture of the Mother Church of the Assumption by Galati Mamertino and the works it houses

The building of the Mother Church of the Assumption of Galati Mamertino is presented in Renaissance style, with two orders surmounted by the tympanum, on which the Cross stands.

In the lower order there are three portals, which correspond to the three internal naves of the building. The central door is the main one, framed by two marble columns and surmounted by the entablature. Above the doors there are three rectangular windows, while in the second order there is a single large window framed by bas-reliefs and volutes, which occupies the center of the facade.

Inside the Church, the architecture expresses the apostolic symbolism in the number of 12 Doric columns that divide the room into three naves. The church houses numerous sacred paintings and statues to admire. We mention here just some of the most important works that you will find in the Mother Church of the Assumption by Galati Mamertino: the Martyrdom of Sant'Agata del Monrealese (XNUMXth century) and the Trinity by Gagini (XNUMXth century).

Galati Mamertino is a small town, but with an ancient history, which dates back to the time of the Greeks and Arabs. In the Renaissance era the city was fortified and began to become as we see it today: the Mother Church of the Assumption is one of the oldest buildings that can be visited in the village, but there are also other sites of historical and artistic interest not to be missed in country: i castle ruins, the former Mother Church of the Rosary, Churches of Santa Caterina need San Luca; also the Prince's Palace (or Palazzo de Spuches) is a stop not to be missed on your tour of the village, which you can complete by walking near St James square, to admire the so-called Baronial Palace.

If you love nature, Galati Mamertino offers you some privileged points of view to admire beautiful views like the one on Nebrodi Park or on Tyrrhenian Sea, from its 800 meters above sea level; always in the village, you can enjoy the spectacle of Catafurgo waterfall, along the San Basilio stream, while going up to 900 meters above sea level you will find theRoe deer area.

Moving a little further away from the town, you can visit the Nebrodi Park or head towards the northern coast of the island, up to Capo d'Orlando with its wonderful beaches.

If your stay is extended, with a journey of approximately 70 km you will arrive at Bronte, while with approximately 110 km you will be at Messina, to admire the city and the Strait.
