History of the Mother Church in Ventimiglia of Sicily

The mother church in Ventimiglia di Sicilia was built in 1628 at the behest of Beatrice, Princess of the fiefdom of Calamigna, the territory that today is known by the name of Ventimiglia. The noblewoman had married Don Girolamo Del Carretto, who was Count of Racalmuto, and had received the very land on which the church stands as a gift. In 1627, Beatrice paid a sum equal to 400 onze to obtain the licentia populandi for Calamigna and thus she gave life to the inhabited center which took the name of Ventimiglia and then gave orders to build the church that would serve all the new faithful of the village. The structure was completed in 1628 even if in the following years it was then the subject of expansion works with the insertion of two other naves with respect to the central one which was the original one. In 1656, on Beatrice's death, her body was buried right inside the mother church.

From an architectural point of view, the mother church presents its exterior with a truly classic architectural style: there is a eardrum with the statue of the Madonna and a lateral bell tower. Inside, however, there is a certain difference in style between the large central nave, which has been present since 1628, and the two smaller lateral ones which are instead posthumous and which are characterized by the presence of six arches and square pillars which act as a support, as per the design of Paolo Amato, architect of the Senate.

Inside, however, the style is much richer and embellished by the presence of numerous works of art, such as a wonderful polyptych painted in oil on wood, dated XNUMXth century and attributed to Panormita.
