The Church of San Nicolò in Venetico Superiore, also known as Mother Church, was built in the sixteenth century and is dedicated to St. Nicholas of Bari.

Venetico Superiore parish: architecture and any works of art present

Over the centuries, the Church of San Nicolò in Venetico Superiore has been enriched with various works of art and furnishings, just think of thecentral altar dating back to 1792, who exhibits a picture called Volto Santo painted in the seventeenth century.
According to an ancient tradition, the latter represents the faithful copy, authorized by the Catholic Church itself, of a handkerchief used as a shroud on the face of Jesus Christ immediately after his death.
Above the altar there is also a wooden crucifix made in the eighteenth century.
The ceiling is instead coffered, the central nave is adorned with refined stuccos and the choir loft houses a recently restored eighteenth-century organ.
Equally important is a wooden pulpit resembling the one located inside the Cathedral of Messina.
As regards instead the bell tower, was rebuilt during the twentieth century by reproducing the original model, since the aforementioned was destroyed by an earthquake.
Fortunately, the sacred building survived the natural disaster because the parish priest of the time had ordered the application of some iron bands aimed at reinforcing the structure.

Once logged into the Venetico Superiore Parish, one cannot help but admire the statue of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, dated to the end of the sixteenth century, the painting portraying the Madonna dell'Arco dating back to the seventeenth century plus other paintings of the sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
In the transept, however, there is not only the Adoration of the Magi, a masterpiece created by Francesco Bonajuto framed with a prestigious frame, but also the Christ at the Column and Flagellation from the XNUMXth century.
Both a canvas and a wooden statue dating back to the sixteenth century have been dedicated to San Nicola.
But the wonders do not end here: in the chapel of the Blessed Sacrament there are some canvases, the painting of the Madonna del Rosario painted by Gaspare Camarda plus two funerary monuments in multicolored marble of the princes of Spadafora and their wives created in the seventeenth century.
Another nice attraction is the Venetian castle, a military and residential building built in the fifteenth century which overlooks the entire town, as it is located on top of a hill.

How is it possible to get to the Venetico Superiore Parish

Venetico Superiore is a town that has just under four thousand inhabitants located in the province of Messina, which is just over half an hour's drive driving feelprovided that the A20/E90 motorway is used.
If the State Road 113 is preferred, the duration of the journey lasts one hour.
There is also the possibility of reaching the aforementioned place on the train, just go to the Messina Centrale railway station and get off at the Spadafora stop.
The journey takes about eighteen minutes.
