The church of San Giuseppe Lavoratore in Porto Empedocle

There are several religious structures in Porto Empedocle in province of Agrigento among which stands out for its religious importance and for the presence of the faithful Church of San Giuseppe the Worker. It is a recently built religious building as the works were started in 1986 in one of the most important residential districts in the northern area of Porto Empedocle to allow citizens to have a religious point of reference.

Already during the XNUMXs, the necessary interventions were carried out to carry out an important renovation, especially as regards the roof. Like most of the modern churches built in the last 50 years, this too has a hexagonal plan with a framed structure with reinforced concrete beams and pillars in order to guarantee resistance over time. The external facade does not have particular valuable elements even if there are vertical and horizontal decorations that offer a nice glance. Furthermore, the large windows stand out among the decorative elements which have been colored with different shades to create a suggestive effect.

Traditions and folk festivals in Porto Empedocle

As in many other areas of Sicily, even in Porto Empedocle there are several festivals that are organized throughout the year and which refer to local tradition and folklore. In particular, on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday immediately following the day of July 16, since 1863, the feast of the Madonna del Carmine which, data in hand, is the oldest manifestation of the community.

Another rather heartfelt recurrence is the Sea party instead established in 1955 and de facto combined with feast of the Madonna del Carmine. It is a rather suggestive event which includes a procession carried out on the sea with boats that faithfully follow the main one on which there is a sacred effigy of the Madonna del Carmine.

Everything becomes even more suggestive thanks to a path that is illuminated by torches of any color and by the sound of the sirens of the ships present. Instead, in the first weekend of the month of September, the festivities are celebrated in honor of San Calogero with a solemn procession during which the simulacrum created during the XNUMXth century, currently kept in the Mother Church, is carried around the main streets of the town. Finally, in Porto Empedocle the Feast of St. Joseph which takes place between 17 and 19 March of each year the solemn procession and various surrounding sports activities.
