Borgo Cavallaro is theancient village of Gaggi, in the Metropolitan City of Messina. A few hundred meters away from Piazza Vittorio Emanuele in Gaggi, Borgo Cavallaro is one of the main attractions of the small Sicilian town on the border with the Wonder Coast.

In this fraction of the village is the most important cult building of Gaggi, the Mother Church of Santa Maria SS. Announced, built in the seventeenth century and today kept alive above all thanks to the generosity of the faithful of Gaggi, who love to celebrate the most important rites of religious life in this Church.

Il Old Jail, another monument of Borgo Cavallaro, dates back to the fifteenth century and was built from the beginning with the aim of becoming a reminder to the memory of the town: the lava stone used to build the main stairway of the prison was extracted near the village and it was preferred to the more common sandstone.

Il Palace of the Marquis of Schisò, built in the XNUMXth century and despite its modest appearance, is finally a testimony of noble life in the Borgo, even if what makes the history linked to the local nobles more interesting is perhaps the presence of dammusi, secret passages used by the nobles to escape from the country and to save themselves in case of danger along the banks of the Alcantara.

The architecture of Borgo Cavallaro in Gaggi and the works to be admired

Borgo Cavallaro looks like a labyrinth of alleys and narrow streets overlooked by low single-storey houses; in this maze the figure of the Mother Church stands out, which with its bell tower rises above all the surrounding buildings. The Vecchio Carcere and Palazzo Schisò are the other most important buildings in the town and are also located in theancient village: all the most important buildings are joined by a network of underground tunnels which connects the ancient Borgo Cavallaro di Gaggi with the banks of the Alcantara.

Those who visit Borgo Cavallaro will also be able to admire the marvelous details of the monuments and works of art found in the centre, such as the tomb of Don Giovanni Battista at the Mother Church with its beautiful bell tower or the stone windows of the Old Jail.
