Here's what you need to know about the Abbey of Chiusa Sclafani, an important building both from a religious point of view and from a social and cultural point of view.

The history of the monumental complex of the Abbey of Chiusa Sclafani

The monumental complex of the Badia di Chiusa Sclafani has a history that starts from afar, having been a ancient monastery. There is no certainty about its construction, but it seems that it could date back to the fifteenth century. The original structure has been modified many times over the centuries, until it was incorporated into the Monastery of Santa Maria del Bosco towards the seventeenth century.

After the abolition of religious orders in 1866, the structure passed into the hands of private owners. The monumental monastery was then acquired by the municipality only in the nineties after several decades of total abandonment. At this point, an important restoration work was carried out, which largely succeeded in recovering some rooms. After the renovation, the structure was returned to the community in its former glory.

The most important architectural features of the Abbey of Chiusa Sclafani

The Abbey of Chiusa Sclafani contains various elements of considerable importance. Originally, it is thought that the refectory was located on the ground floor, together with the kitchen and storeroom. Generally, these monastic structures were all formed in the same way. Either way, the complex overlooks a beautiful courtyard, which manages to give natural light to the environment.

As for the upper floors, precisely on the first, there are all the cells that belonged to the nuns and the private chapels where a fresco is visible. At the same time, the ancient monastery is made very special thanks to the presence of two stone ovens, used by the nuns for the distillation of perfumes. The latter acquired an essential role in contributing to the maintenance of the monastery.
