THE Antiquarium of Himera Termini Imerese, dates back to the first half of the eighties of the last century on a project by Franco Minissi and wanted to preserve the most significant archaeological finds found in the Himera area and in the surrounding territories.
Himera was a Greek colony founded in 648 BC straddling the promontories of Cefalù and Termini Imerese, near the mouth of the river Imera. It was a city that experienced a formidable building development and of urban planning importance during the XNUMXth century BC as evidenced by the Sanctuary of Athena built in the upper part of the Polis.
Architecture and any works of art present in the Antiquarium of Himera Termini Imerese
The museum itinerary of the Antiquarium of Himera in Termini Imerese is divided into multiple levels connected to each other with ramps and proposes the most significant cultural and historical problems of the then existing Greek colony related to this territory.
Very useful, right at the entrance, the placement of educational panels explaining the history of Himera and of the territory occupied at that time and a nearby space is reserved for an eaves in the shape of a lion's head from the Temple of Victory.
On the upper floor there are some architectural remains and some votive offerings from Temenos of Athena which was located in the upper part of the Polis.
In the central part of the museum, objects found during the various excavations that took place over time are visible, while in the lower part, a theory of objects, kits and vases from the Necropolis . It is possible to admire artifacts found in other parts of the territory such as Monte Riparato, Terravecchia di Cuti, Cefalù, Mura Pregne.
What you can do around the Antiquarium of Himera Termini Imerese
Termini Imerese offers points of extreme interest worthy of being known. This is a short list of suggested places:
Baldassarre Roman Civic Museum
Opposite the Duomo, this museum, born at the end of the XNUMXth century, houses numerous archaeological finds from different eras, even if those found in the archaeological area of Himera represent a significant part of the visible objects. Also interesting is the art gallery where there are works by Sicilian painters of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries who refer to the Flemish style and local artists of the nineteenth century.
Duomo
The most important church in Termini Imerese is the fifteenth-century Cathedral dedicated to San Nicola di Bari. With a Latin cross and three naves, the religious building houses numerous works of art among which emerges the Chapel of Santa Maria la Nova with an altar dating back to the XNUMXth century dedicated to the Immaculate Conception and characterized by polychrome marble and a wooden cross. The Cathedral recently inaugurated a Museum of Sacred Art.
Via Roma
This nineteenth-century central street is very scenic due to a monumental staircase that connects the upper part of the town with the one below, through a sinuous path made up of steps arranged in triple rows. On this street there are some of the most important historical buildings of the city such as the Jesuit College - today the Court - and the Medieval Tower.
San Leonardo bridge
The eighteenth-century Ponte di San Leonardo, built under the Habsburg reign, is a considerable architectural work located outside the city on the SS113. Built only from a central round arch and a small lateral arch with perpendicular ramps, it was a necessary link with the road leading to Palermo.
