The beaches of Nice of Sicily

Nizza di Sicilia is a seaside town located in the Nisi Valley which, until 1860 was known as San Ferdinando but which, with a Royal Decree of 1863, assumed the name of Nizza di Sicilia at the direct will of Giuseppe Garibaldi who, in this way, he wanted to pay homage to his hometown and thank the Sicilian population who had contributed financially to his expedition that arrived on the island.

This locality is the one that has the largest beach in the whole Messina area. Composed of gray gravel mixed with pebbles, it is surrounded by a thriving and typical Mediterranean scrub and these two colors allow the clear sea to bring out all its beauty.

In fact it is a sea that takes on different shades of color ranging from iridescent turquoise to blue passing through soft shades, I indicate.

The beaches of Nizza di Sicilia are free to access but there are also areas managed by perfectly organized bathing establishments where bathers can take advantage of the rental of umbrellas, deck chairs and sunbeds.

The seabed, initially low, slopes gently towards the open sea along the entire width of a coastline of over 1,6 kilometers which starts from Sant'Alessio Siculo until you get to Ali Terme.

Undoubtedly it is one of the most beautiful beaches in Eastern Sicily which is located on the stretch of coast that from the mouth of the Fiumedinisi reaches up to the small roccalumera.

The beaches of Nizza di Sicilia, due to their characteristics, are widely frequented during the summer by numerous tourists and vacationers who stay in various accommodation facilities on the coast. Obviously it is the clarity of the sea that bathes this coast which acts as the main attraction and which is capable of attracting the interest of snorkelling and diving enthusiasts who are attracted by the seabed rich in many marine species and fish.

Given the characteristics of the beach which is spacious and well organized and its proximity to the town, there are many families with children who choose it as the ideal location to spend days of relaxation and fun.

On the other hand, Nizza di Sicilia is a center that is practically halfway between Messina and Taormina and this makes it an excellent starting point for exploring the eastern territory of Sicily.

The houses overlooking the marina overlooking the beaches, enjoy an excellent panorama especially at sunset which sends warm colors on the beautiful paved promenade equipped with benches and games for children, surrounded by greenery.

The town is rather quiet and so are the beaches of Nizza di Sicilia, namely those of Alì Terme, Capo Alì, Itala and Roccalumera. they are uncrowded and therefore ideal for a seaside holiday away from the confusion of other Sicilian locations.

Nizza di Sicilia is an interesting town, as well as for its long coastline, also for the attractions that are interesting to know such as the remains of the walls of the D'Alcontres Castle that once had the task of protecting the Valley from invaders or the Church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista which is set on the walls of the castle where, inside, there is the statue of Mary Immaculate.

For fans of the genre we suggest a visit to Museum of the Risorgimento which preserves original documents of the time as well as weapons, medals and other testimonies largely belonging to a Garibaldian from Nice.

A curiosity linked to Nizza di Sicilia is that of the so-called Festa Ranni, i.e. the big party it celebrates Mary Immaculate which, every four years, cheers the population. The festival, which takes place in the summer, is a form of thanksgiving by the fishermen to their patroness who sees the traditional sea procession as a sign of benevolence and a blessing to the fishing boats so that they can see a good catch.

Precisely in this event a very heartfelt secular song is sung called the dudici stiddi, invented by the citizens of Nice in Sicily in homage to Mary and which says ''how big this sea is, it is full of fish. Mary bless him for all eternity''.
