Curiosities about the Aeolian Islands

The Aeolian Islands are appreciated above all for the beauty of the beaches and for the sea crystalline present practically everywhere.

There are actually many other aspects that make these islands unique. A first curiosity that probably no one knows is related to the fact that on islands of Lipari and Salina there were the first settlements since the sixth millennium BC. At the time civilization based much of theworking activity in the practice of fishery and used theossidian which was the sharpest material, known at the time to make weapons for hunting. It is no coincidence that all the islands are important museums and especially that of Lipari is considered among the most important throughout the Mediterranean because there are testimonies and objects dating back to periods prior to the Roman Empire and to the most famous populations present on the Italian territory.

Another curiosity is related to geological conformation of all the islands that are of volcanic nature. However, the mountains that can be appreciated are only a very small part of what is the original crater. For example the wonderful Stromboli which it has a volcano 924 m high, it is actually below sea level, the same crater extends for a further 2.000 m.

The main activity of the Aeolian Islands

Although the various towns and villages are mainly inhabited by fishermen who have carried on this tradition for entire generations, fishing is not the main activity that allows all citizens to livelihood. In fact, the economy is mainly based on agriculture with particular reference to two important products exported all over the world such as Malvasia wine mainly produced in Salina ei capers.

The water problem of the Aeolian Islands

While on the one hand the volcanic conformation of all the islands that make up the Aeolian archipelago has made it possible to create a truly unique and intriguing naturalistic environment, on the other hand it has led to problems especially as regards water. The many sources present on all the islands, they have been slowly and inexorably dried up over the years due to the presence of still active volcanoes. The very high temperatures of the volcanoes have in fact dried up the water present in the subsoil if not with some small exceptions which mainly concern the Alicudi and Filicudi islands. However, these springs are not sufficient to satisfy the water needs of the various citizens present even in the smallest centres. To remedy this shortcoming, the water supply with the use of huge ships and with a desalination process that involves the use of latest generation machinery with the aim of having new springs on all the islands.
