The village of Cesarò in the Nebrodi Park

In the province of Messina, located on the steep sides of a severe cliff and framed by beech and oak woods, the village of Cesarò is inserted within the largest protected area of ​​the whole island, the Nebrodi Park.

Due to its characteristics, Cesarò is certainly one of the most suggestive places in the area in terms of landscape and this peculiarity acts as a magnet for many tourists and nature lovers.

The origins of Cesarò

Of its origin it is assumed that this was wanted due to its strategic position and the first documented news of the town dates back to the beginning of the seventeenth century. However it is very probable that it is even older and can be traced back to the Arab domination in Sicily, so much so that its toponym was Kisar, and consequently before the XIII century. In fact, it is precisely in this period that the first nobles date back - dukes and barons - who alternated in the task of governing the Feudal municipality of Cesarò which also included the neighboring territories. These families, related to the Colonna Romano who lived during the reign of Frederick II of Swabia. Dynasties that saw fourteen feudal successions, reaching up to the eighteenth century.

Cesarò and its traditions

The village still preserves the modus vivendi that reigned in the past made up of simplicity and customs such as, for example, preparing bread cooked in a wood-burning oven or making pasta at home as was the custom in the past and all this to keep the tradition unchanged. Also there local cuisine it is made of simple and not very elaborate things where spices enhance the genuine flavours.

Tourists can appreciate all of this from the moment they arrive and rediscover the flavors and aromas of a past that is in some ways remote.

Cesarò is considered the gateway to the Nebrodi Park and within its territory there is also the highest peak of the Nebrodi chain, namely Monte Soro.

What to see in Cesarò

Before dedicating time to the visit of the Nebrodi Park, it is advisable to know the village of Cesarò starting from Zito Palace, which is located in the historic center.

It is the most significant and elegant noble palace in the town and bears witness to an era rich in history and traditions. This residence is placed in a particularly interesting position that offers the vision of beautiful panoramas of both the valley below and the Troina river and Etna. Developed on three levels built in different eras, Palazzo Zito dates back to the end of the XNUMXth century even if the end of the building works can be traced back to the following century. The artistic content present is very important, such as the many frescoes found on the vaults of the upper floors of the building, such as the noble coats of arms and the stuccos that adorn it.

Headquarters of the Nebrodi Regional Natural Park, inside it also preserves a cultural itinerary represented by the Nebrodi Museum of Knowledge where the visitor can also discover the uses and customs of the pastoral and peasant civilization that inhabited this area.

Another interesting destination to explore are the ruins of the ancient ducal castle where it is possible to admire a spectacular portal in Baroque which bears witness to the splendor that this fortress-residence once had.

Cesarò and the Nebrodi Park

Forming parts of the Sicilian Apennines together with the Madonie and Peloritani, i Nebrodi Mountains they arrive on the Tyrrhenian Sea on one side and Etna on the other with the presence of the Simeto and Alcantara rivers.   • Camisa, a well-organized and well-kept area located at an altitude of 1100 metres, has picnic facilities and equipped bathrooms. There is also a small shelter that is always open;

  • Noceri vegetable garden; in the Capizzi district at 1116 meters above sea level, the area is equipped for camping.
