The Gibellina Nuova area was born following a very ambitious urban planning project. The idea was implemented by mayor Ludovico Corrao, who decided to redevelop the area. The work involved the transformation of urban center in a real open-air museum, which would have been regarded as the largest in Europe. The goal was to create surreal architecture, buildings conceived in such a way as to highlight very creative perspectives and full of permanent sculptures. The source of artistic inspiration was represented by post-modernism.

The project saw many world-renowned artists as protagonists. The latter decided to collaborate with well-known architects, who were entrusted with the task of reformulating the entire urban structure of the town of Gibellina Nuova, to be built with anti-seismic buildings. The most important interventions involved various high-level structures. For example, the main meeting places of the city were enriched by various artwork, which were placed in various points of the residential area. In a similar project, culture and art were considered as the cornerstones, which favored the reconstruction of New Gibellina according to very different principles than in the past.
