History and origins of Mistretta

In ancient times, this suggestive place was known by the denominations of Amestratus, Amastra, Mestratum and Mitistratos. Since its origins, the village has assumed an important strategic role for the peoples who have inhabited it, a transit area not to be left in the background, near Palermo and Messina.
Some studies suggest that the Phoenicians laid the foundation stone of Mistretta. Other currents of thought, however, mention the Sicels as the first people to found a civilization. There is no shortage of finds of ceramic remains which reinforce this thesis. The fortress it would have been created by the Arabs, with ruins still clearly visible today. Later, the Normans arrived to continue the work on the fortress and make it even more majestic. In 1400, this small town was embellished with the construction of various churches and sculptures, such as the Mother Church.

Important is the Mistretta Castle, a dwelling that dominates the entire town. Its history is somewhat tormented, with origins dating back to 1100 and many historical events such as the arrival of King Frederick of Aragon, who stayed here during the night before marrying Constance. In 1500, the castle lost its prestige until it became a prison. A century later, the local inhabitants themselves dismantled its walls. The stones were then used to build the houses in the village. Don't miss the famous either Valley of the Falls, with a strong naturalistic impact thanks to the Golden boat room and the proximity to the Madonie.
How to reach Mistretta
To get to Mistretta, with the driving feel, just exit on the A20 at Santo Stefano di Camastra or Tusa and travel 10-15 kilometers by car to the city centre. Who travels on the train it can stop at the Sant'Agata di Militello or Cefalù stations, about 30 kilometers from the town. The stopover plane the closest is located in Catania, 80 kilometers from the destination.
