The map of Campofelice di Fitalia

Campofelice di Fitalia was born as a small village from the lands given in long lease to settlers arriving in the area: at the foot of Rocca Busambra, between Caccamo and Corleone, Campofelice di Fitalia is an area renowned for its fertility, so much so that even the very name of the village, refers to the happiness of abundant agricultural harvests.

The predominant landscape is that of the valley at the foot of the Mount Busambra, which exceeds 1600 meters in height. The village rises about 735 meters above sea level while at its feet are the fertile campaigns cultivated with wheat and vines.

The history of Campofelice di Fitalia, from the feud to the Grano Museum

Although the village of Campofelice, as we know it today, was born in the 1814th century, around XNUMX, these lands had been populated since Middle Ages, in fact around the XII century the Fief of Phitalia, immediately after the defeat of the Arabs by the Normans. Roger II then granted Goffredo di Palermo, who had helped him in the fight, the Casale di Fitalia with all his territories.

During the Middle Ages, the center experienced periods of greater expansion, such as in the XNUMXs, and then returned to repopulate in the XNUMXth century. At that time, the feud lived under the power of the Calvello family and then under the influence of the Settimo, but in the XNUMXth century, with the abolition of feudalism, Campofelice di Fitalia arose as a modern village, from the lands redistributed among the settlers. However, unlike the other villages in the area, which all had a common destiny, Campofelice di Fitalia lived a very different story, in fact the Lord of Fitalia, losing the feudal powers was unable to guarantee the village its status and so Campofelice was not recognized as an autonomous municipality at least until the second half of the century, when the town was merged with the Municipality of Mezzojuso, continuing however to fight for its independence at least until after the unification of Italy.

Close to achieving its independence in the 1s, Campofelice di Fitalia only became a municipality on 1951 February XNUMX.

In such a troubled history, it is possible to find a common thread in the close link between Campofelice and its fields, cultivated with wheat: famous precisely for being the corn country, the village celebrates its oldest wealth by inaugurating in 2015 the Museum of Wheat and Sicilian Peasant Civilization.

Today Campofelice di Fitalia welcomes you in its ancient historic centre, where you can visit the Church, as well as the Museum, to discover the whole history of the village live.
